should I move or copy theme to root theme folder?

Permalink 1 user found helpful
Hi all,

New to using concrete5

I will to use the standard Elemental theme to begin with but edit to suit.

As you know it is in concrete5's theme folder

My question is, before I start playing around with it, should I MOVE the whole Elemental folder into the root theme folder or COPY the whole Elemental folder into the root theme folder? or do I leave it where it is and edit away?

I'm not sure how things should be done

Thanks

MrKD has created a packaged clone of elemental that should be an easier starting point for uses such as yours.

It is currently in the PRB and should be released within a week.

Hi

Thanks for the reply

Not sure what PRB is and not sure how a clone of elemental would be easier for me.

I'm ok with the theme now. I don't have an issue working with it.

I'm just not sure if i'm supposed to move / copy it into root/themes before I begin editing it?

I think I read somewhere that it may be overwritten via an update if left where it is, but I can't remember where I saw that thread, hence why i'm asking.

Always copy. Never edit a core component (such as a theme) in place. Never remove. Your whole site could die.

Having it already packaged would save you from some of the intricacies of copying and consistently renaming inside.

PRB = Peer Review Board, the process of reviewing and approving submissions for the marketplace.

Hi

Thanks for speedy reply and explanation.

So copying is the way.

I'll be on the lookout for MrKD's packaged clone of elemental though being new to concrete5 i'm still not clear on how I should use it.

I am under the impression that if I copy a theme into my root\theme then that will be the theme used and it does not affect the theme in the core theme folder.

atm I'm testing on localhost, but hope to go live in a week or so.

You can create your own theme in /application or in /packages

When you install a theme from the marketplace, like Cloneamental, after installing it, you will find it in /packages.

When a theme is installed, you can use it for just a page (page-design), or your entire website (/dashboard/pages/themes ->activate a theme).

For more on how to work with themes have a look at the docs.

Hi

I refer to the docs constantly, but with so much new info to learn it's hard to retain it all immediately for example I don't recall reading that a theme could be created in packages.

I appreciate that bit of info and thanks for the further explanation, helpful.

Just downloaded cloneamental. Very nice and with clear information. Now I understand why it was recommended.

Thanks all
