Theme query with standard elements

Hi All
First of all - thank you for even looking here as I'm pulling my hair out! hehe
I'm evaluating Concrete5 for a new site for my car club (and possibly others) but I stuck at the first hurdle! new page types and themes!
On a particular theme I've duplicated full.php and renamed it ted.php. I've set up the page types, etc, etc. and that's all working fine!
However when I create a new page with full - it auto puts in a top nav - but when I do the same with ted - it doesn't (but it's the same code!).
Meanwhile when I do then add a auto-nav block into the header it doesn't style it like the rest of the site (yet as far as I can see everything is the same!).
Am I going mad?

take a look at Page Defaults, it has almost nothing to do with the theme, but everything to do with pagetypes
