Theme width (beginner)

Hello, this is a beginner question. I like the default theme, but it seems to be designed for a width of 800 pixils. I would like it to be wider. Is there a simple way to change this?

The quick answer is yes... The best answer is probably not.
you can edit style sheets etc. to suit particular needs, but in this case it may be easier to use another similar theme (see moldy yogurt for example)that is wider. You can then make change colors as needed instead of sizes.

Thank you for the reply! Moldy Yogurt is great except I would like to use a large banner image for a header. Is there a way to search themes by width, or is it more of a trial and error deal?

Unfortunately, many of the themes don't state their width where I can spot it readily. You can view live demos or examples when available and, depending on your browser and plug-ins, right click on the page and select "inspect element" to view how many pixels wide the site intended to be.
FYI... I've used a free theme "Yosemite" ( I think its 980px) for its large top banner for one of my clients employment site and am happy with the results.

LOTS of choices out there!
