Unable to copy a page and give it a new design

Hi all,
I have a website with 2 page types and I would like to copy a page that has page type A and then assign it to page type B. In effect this should give me 2 pages with duplicate content in the 'Main' block area but with 2 different designs.
The problem I am having is that when I copy the page it copies all of the other blocks on the page and copies them also to the new page type. So when I change the copied page to page type B I see blocks from both page type A and B on the same page. For example both page types have their own navigation and I am now getting 2 lots of navigation on the same page.
I hope this makes sense.
Do any of you good people out there know what I am doing wrong and how to fix this?

I think you create alias of a page rather copy of that page.
If I create it as an alias will that not mean that both pages will have to have the same page type?
Changing one will change the other, is this correct?
