I setup a group and added one user to it. at this point the only rights the user has is the group witch i added to the filemanager access area. how does the user get to the filemanager after they login, seeing thier is no dashboard option at the top? can i just add a link to a page?

I am having the same problem. I granted permissions for file manager both in the sitemap link and the access tab for file manager. Still when the user logs in he has no icon.
A quick solution for front end access is to create a "members only" page with the page permissions set to be viewed by the members and admins only. Its also a quick way to post reminders or diy instructions for members after they log in :)
This page will then have the tool bar across the top for accessing the file manager or dashboard but is not visible to the general public

I already had a members only page. The issue was that I did NOT want him to be an admin or to see the dashboard, only be able to edit one page and see the file manager. I figured it out. I gave him access permissions in file manager. Then I made him an admin, logged in as him and on the dashboard checked the box in sitewide to show the file manager. Then I logged out as him, logged in as admin and took him out of the admin group so he can't see the dashboard. For the pages he has permission to edit he now sees the file manager.

Glad you found a solution that worked out for you :)
Using Advanced permissions in a similar manner, I didn't have to use the extra step of logging them in as administrators on a couple of sites.
