Advanced Permissions headache/adding blank versions on edit/unable to attribute design tag on blocks

Hi All,
I have a serious problem at the moment on my site. After reading a lot about Advanced permissions I decided to go for the option, MY GOD, I wish I hadn't - My site is now pretty much inoperable as I can't edit anything and when I can - nothing works.
Firstly, this never happened before: I edit a page full of content and all I get on the edit page is a completely blank page. It creates a 'new version xxx' which I delete, then approve the correct page. Exit edit mode and then... I get a blank page waiting for me to approve it! if I log out, its fine, I can see the page as I obviously don't approve it.
Secondly. When I can after many attempts get to a page that I can edit, I can no longer see the design attribute. Sure, I then Set Permission, making sure that I have the right user group assigned to it and signed it to be able to do this then.. NOPE.. still no design attribute!!! Most of the time, I can't even override the settings, it just says 'unable to retrieve block please reload' I reload... then get a blank page!! merghhh....
Please please please, can someone suggest something! My site is now unable to work, we're a medium sized Tour company and this will cost us loss of online revenue.

2. Normally the switch to Advanced Permissions should not make major changes. The only thing that you should expect at first is the amount of increased settings in the Permissions dialogue.
3. So for your site to break after the conversion, I expect that you have made some permission changes on the home page that is inherited down through your site.
4. but for any of us to help you, you have to supply even more information. Perhaps some screen shots of the permission dialogues where you have the error.
