Advanced Permissions: How to show sidepanel in Dashboard?

I switched the user permissions to advanced by adding a line to config/site.php, created a new user group called Editors to enable a more fine-granular handling of user rights.
But when I log in as an editor there is no (downsized) sidepanel in the dashboard, like in other CM systems.
So, the permission system, no matter if basic or advanced, does not make too much sense to me. Or have I overlooked something?
