after 5.2.1 -> 5.3.2 upgrade: page source code generation cuts off

upgrading our 5.2.1 site to any 5.3.x version causes the following to happen:

site works correctly when not logged in. logging in goes fine, dashboard area all looks fine and seems to work okay (though i haven't checked it out thoroughly). clicking "return to website" link generates a blank page with the toolbar at the top and only the "dashboard" button. if i view the page source code (this should be the home page), it cuts off partway through this line:

<li><a id="ccm-nav-help" helpurl="http://www.concrete5.org/help/" href="javascript:void(0)" helpwaiting="

there should be the rest of that line plus quite a bit more code, but that's it.

i really don't have much of a grasp on how concrete 5 generates page code, so i'm not really sure where to target my troubleshooting. this only happens after upgrading to 5.3.x.

any help would be appreciated.

yes. it completed "successfully".

ok, i'm checking out the dashboard and most of it isn't working either. the ones that work are Reports, Users and Groups, Pages and Themes, and the File Manager (though thumbnails don't display the actual pic). the rest don't do anything, but the source code looks complete.

we use a custom theme, if that helps.

can you post screenshots of non-working dashboard pages

they all look like the Sitemap page (SS attached), except a different button is highlights. however, the Sitewide Settings page (SS attached) shows tabs across the top as well.

Scrapbook page works fine, also.
