Avatar as PNG

Is it possible to use a transparent PNG file for the avatar?
It seems every time I upload it, it's converted to a jpg with white background.

Being able to use transparent PNG files for avatar images would be useful.
At the moment, the avatar images are hard coded to be .jpg files.

When the avatar images are retrieved, it is assumed they are.jpg files.

I think another issue is that the avatar image editor uses Flash and does not support saving with a transparent background.
