avoid losing changes after installing C5 update

I modified the header.php and footer.php files of the C5 default theme. I did this to remove the site name and divider from the header. I do not want to achieve the change by editing the "My Site Name" scrapbook. I just installed the latest C5 update and lost those changes. What is a better way to achieve these changes so they are not lost during future updates? Many thanks, Catherine
