can't type in search text box

Well we're getting there, resolving one issue after another.

So I opened the search page and tried to enetr text into the search box but I can't. The box seems to be uneditable.

Just performed a few checks and found that the search works in MS IE and Opera but not firefox or chrome.

SOLUTION: delete the existing search block and input a new one.

If you ever run into that again, you might have had a z-index issue. Whenever that happens with me, I've got a div on top of it. Did you try looking in Firebug? It usually helps me pin point what is laying on top.
