Cannot access sitemap

I cannot access the sitemap. When I click the tab "sitemap", nothing happens. When I try and access the sitemap through the dashboard, it gives an error message "An unexpected error occurred. A database error occurred while processing this request."
On a related matter, when I pull up a page I want to copy or delete, I get a message stating "unable to load site map data."
I have been editing our website for about 3 years, and have not had this problem before.
I have very limited technical knowledge so would appreciate any assistance on this.

Have you updated lately? I may be a permissions thing or a borked file somewhere. I could take a look if you PM me an admin login.
