Cant get to publish from edit button

Hi i'm very new to concrete5 so sorry if this turns out a simple problem
So installed the newest concrete5 setup today and it was all working fine for a while but now when i go to press the edit mode after i have made my edits i can't get that drop down window to appear with the publish option and the other options such as design etc.
When i try to click it, it goes from green to blue (the edit button) but nothing else happens. Is this a system fault or something of my own doing? Be much grateful for any help as i don't seem to be able to publish without it.
I haven't really adjusted any files at all to cause this i believe.
P.S. Further exploring seems i can't access any drop down menus inside the dashboard as well
