change pagetype or theme and loose content
Permalink
is their a way to change themes or pagetypes that have different blocks "header nave, side bar, etc" without loosing the content. can i tell it to put header image in main, and side bar in the new header nav for example. or is their another solution. this makes it hard to change a websites theme.
my site has over 1000 paes and the problem is i'm limited to themes that i can switch to because of the differences in the pagetype blocks. unless their is an adjustment i can do that will make the update work.
It doesn't metter how many pages your site has - what only metter is how many page types you are using and how many areas are there. Typiccaly it's like 5-15 areas per whole template (even if it has, let's say,5 different page types) - It's not so big deal to check them and compare with new theme... :)
ya, but i have a theme that i really like, but am unable to upgrade due to this issue.
What page type is most prevalent on those 1000 pages? Are most of them full, right sidebar, or left sidebar? You can find this out by going to Dashboard > Page Search. Then filter the pages by type and see which type has the most pages on it.
Also, what theme are you currently using and which theme are you wanting to switch to?

they are all the same page type "fluid layout". i have spacelab, but have tested several themes and all of them don't match right. i want to build a site so i can upgrade easily without going page by page.
I need to know which theme you are wanting to go to. Without this, I may not be able to give you a proper answer.
on my current theme it has the main content in the header image block. this is the only place for it so most other themes arent configured this way. too bad i could choose where to move the content. example: header image to main on new theme sitewide.
I am afraid that such a feature doesn't exist in that form, but depending on the theme you switch to there may be a way to automate most things.
because of this issue i havnt chose one 100%. this is an example of one i am concidering.

I just came up with a idea. Let me test it real quick. I will get back to you ASAP.
Sorry it took so long to get back. Had some unexpected delays.
My idea failed, but I did do a test and it appears that the content of the site doesn't change when the theme is changed. I changed from the default style to Destyle, and there was not a single letter of content lost. Now when I changed it from Destyle to Jacket, I lost everything I put in the sidebars, but I got it all back when I reverted back to Destyle.
What ever you choose, back up your site and database before you proceed. 1000 pages is a lot of work to loose and not be able to get back easily. If you backup, it will save you a load of pain!

You will not loose any content if all areas would appear in both themes you are switching with matching names. Just go through all page types in templates, and make corrections if necessary.
