Changing Blog layout

I'm fairly new to making edits and customizations to C5 but I'm wanting to learn a bit more. My big issue and project at the moment is trying to make a much more effect blog layout. I have built my current theme off of Greek Yogurt and the blog layout is rather weak.

What I'm trying to accomplish is to get my blog layout somewhat in the ballpark of this layout (taken from the Slate theme)

Bump .. any thoughts? Is there a better block to use or maybe a configuration to the current block?
You can try some of the custom templates from the marketplace or create your own.

Click on the 'Page List' block and select 'Custom Template' to see your options, then select your preferred custom template.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Any recommendations on a good php development book that fits well with C5?
