Is there an easy way to change column width( i.e. add to main width, add to side bar width, etc...)?
at present the only way to do this is to change your theme's css file.
While this isn't exactly what you asked, layouts can be useful for this.
What we sometimes do is use a "full width" page type. And if the customer wants a sidebar, they simply add a 2 column layout and stretch it to the width they need.
This only works if your sidebar doesn't have a different background / design etc to the main content area.
