Concrete 5.6 pages show all sorts of weird things when editing in Explorer 8

Thanks to jmonroe, I have finally managed to get version 5.6.0.2 working on my site. I really like it, except when I try to edit any pages, lots of odd things happen when I edit in Explorer
1. You go to add a block to a page, choose something, it doesn't matter what, and you just get a blank black background. Then if you scroll down for quite a long way, you will eventtually see the block you are trying to add. That is odd - first few times I thoght something was wrong till I saw a second scroll bar appear to the right and I scrolled down
2. Try to move a placed block on a page you are editing and its impossible, it won't scroll up, scrolls down by itself - essentially, you have very little control over where the block moves to. Only possible to move it up above one block at a time and save in between each move attempt. hopeless.
3. Then having tried to move anything, half the editable page disapeaers and a kind of horizontal scroll bar goes across the page you are viewing.
4. If you get past three, when scrolling down, superfish menu and header images, start travelling down the page as you scroll.
All in all a nightmare that simply wasn't present in the old version 5.4.2.2 which was great to edit with by comparison.
I don't have so many issues when editing in Chrome, but why just IE 8? I have not changed anythin on the PC except updating concrete 5.
I can't afford Windows 7 and IE9 so what's the answer - anyone else seen this? I have tried it on 4 different PC's all running XP and IE8 and every one exhibits the same issues.
Theme maybe? Its the simple blue theme - very basic - unlikely to be an issue?
