copying pages - help? simple method?
Please excuse newbie qn - I'm probably missing something, but I'm finding copying a page (something I usually do quite often) is not very simple. I'm not sure how easy it will be to explain to a non-technically minded end user.
Is there a basic dummies guide somewhere?
Atm I am using the Move/Delete button (which isn't even labelled copy) and then I have to edit the page title, which is fair enough, but I have to go back to sitemap via the dashboard to do this. It is also not immediately obvious that you should edit the canonical URL too - I think there should be a prompt for this?
Is there a much better way of duplicating and then editing a page?
thanks v much

Thanks very much - that is a bit simpler, but I still don't think it's very obvious that once you've copied a page you ought to change the URL, metadata etc since they are on separate tabs. In my experience people often forget to do that part!
I understand your point. To me, though, it makes sense -- when I copy something I feel like I am going to get an exact copy (including name and url slug), and assume that I'll need to change the things I want to be different. For example, if I copy a file from one folder to another on my computer, I assume it's going to be the exact same file in the new folder and I need to change the name myself if I want it to be different.
Just my 2 cents.

You're right, and I pretty much agree with you, but you are looking at it from the point of view of someone who doesn't think an url slug is a garden pest! I work with a lot of people who have no idea what metadata is and can just about grasp what an URL is, but are quite happy to go copying pages right and left, editing the page content to something quite different but leaving all the old metadata unchanged. Having all the page property stuff on separate tabs kind of hides it a bit.
I've only built 3 small sites so far in c5 so I have a lot to learn but am very impressed by what it can do. It's just that some parts are not very user-friendly for non-techies, and the user documentation is not exactly great. Having said which, I've had to use FAR worse...

Understood. But if someone doesn't have any idea what metadata is or why a URL slug matters, then I would argue it's *better* that it is hidden behind separate tabs. All of that stuff is optional, and the only reason it really matters is for SEO (and since URL slugs and page titles are a relatively important aspect of that, anyone who knows about SEO will be familiar with those things).
I do agree that the UI could be streamlined a bit, though. Right now it's still pretty decent compared to other systems, but I am sure that over the next few years, it will start to look really outdated.
I also agree that the docs are lacking. Hope that gets improved over time, but it's very difficult to write good docs so who knows when that will happen.
Great discussion, thanks!

Hover your mouse over the icon of a page in the sitemap and drag it onto the page that's above where you want to copy it to. A dialog will come up asking if you want to move or copy it, choose "copy".
