core form block - move label above form field

I am trying to place the labels above each field instead of on the left side, so the form will fit more gracefully into a column in my theme (Slate). Thanks!

if I remember rightly the core form block uses a table and the label and field are on the same table row but in adjacent cells.
I think you'd really need to use a custom template for this.
