Custom Verticle Nav Template

I am trying to use the left side bar for my Nav.
Sadly the default leaves them spaced and fores lines. I know I can build a custom template for this. just to line them up tighter and without the line/using the default text color.
But I am new to CSS and can't find anyone on here who has done it.
I'm sure it's been done?
Does anyone know the code or can point me a guide?
