Editing on shared hosting slow
Permalink
Hi,
I know, my fault for going with shared hosting, but I have a couple of clients that host their sites with Hostgator that are experiencing some really quite slow response times when logged in and editing. Browsing the site logged out seems ok, not great.
When editing, I get hangs, slow-downs and general hiccups all over the place. Is this purely down to shared hosting, or are there other things I can do to help my clients have a smoother experience?
If something like a Mosso/Rackspace cloud is really going to speed things up, then I'll try convincing them of that, but best to try to speed things with the current set up first if possible.
Thanks,
osu

Thanks for getting back to me Franz.
I assume database query logging refers to: Sitewide settings > Debug > 'Log Database Activity', which is off on my site. Caching is on as well...is there something else I can try as the site is still slow...?

you can make sure logging was always off, if not it might have made a very bloated table in your site with gigs of logging data.. that would slow anything down.
beyond that... run eAccelerator? Which a shared host prolly wont do..
host with us? ;)

Would gladly host with you guys, I'm sure it would make things a lot easier! Usually, my clients are usually guided by a dark and mis-guided in-house IT force, but I'll raise it as a solution.
I'll take a look in the database and see if there are signs of bloat.
Thanks

i have a reseller package on HG. i also noticed some performance issues with c5. i disabled all the logging features and enabled cache. this seemed to help. i will list anything i can come up with to help out on this thread.
I've been on HostGator for a couple years, and only recently did I notice this problem. I figured that my server had just gotten overcrowded or something.
I would definitely be interested if anyone determines what might be causing this issue.
Then again, nevertheless, I can't complain with $10 for unlimited domains, space and bandwidth. No more bean counting

I tried asking HostGator's support if there was a reason or anything that could be done, but they said it would just be a matter of how many MySQL calls were being executed, and how well they were designed.
HostGator always seems snappy for all of my other content, so maybe it was just having a bad day

most sites i have are running on hostgator, and i haven't experienced any speed issues, though i imagine it could vary from server to server. mine is also a reseller account, so that might could make a difference (maybe they put those on different servers?) or maybe it's just a temporary issue. i guess there's lots of potential factors...
