Elemental Theme: Edited the design, see it in edit mode, don't see it when published

Hi all,
I am having a try at c5.7 again ... started off with Elemental Theme. I am not in edit mode. I click the wheel -> Theme Customize -->Design
I change the color and size of H1, H2 etc.
I click on save and on --> Apply this design to just this page, or your entire site?
I click --> This Page
I see the changes, everything looks like I intended it to
Now the box appears, telling me my page is pending approval
I approve the page and the design goes back to the default style again
Exactly the same thing happens if I am in edit mode and go through the steps again.
On publishing the custom design disappears
The custom style is still there though. Once I go into edit again and click save all is well.
As soon as I click publish, all is gone
What am I doing wrong? I don't get it.
Please someone point me in the right direction!
