Enabling Pretty URL

I apologize in advance for this basic question and if it has been asked before as I am unable to search the forums. I have created numerous pages and everything had worked just fine. Then I clicked the enable pretty url box, forgot about it, created a forum and calendar, and now I am able to access the forum and calendar via the links on my home page, however all the content that I created before clicking the "enable pretty url" box is not found. I am actually getting the following message: "The requested URL does not exist."

Now I know that concrete5 provides us with the code and the following message:

"You must copy the lines of code below and place them in your server's configuration file or .htaccess file."

Where exactly is the .htaccess file located at? Is it found in concrete5 where I have created my site or is it found in Blue Host? Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated as I seem to only be going in circles and I know there are a lot of you whom understand this stuff way more than I do. Once again, many thanks!!

just create one in your concrete5 install (should be in public_html/) via ftp and edit it, paste the code and everything should be fine.
