Errors in Updating Concrete5
Permalink
Hello. I decided that I wanted to upgrade Concrete5 to the newest version and I backed up my site. I ran the upgrade and everthing was fine until I noticed that the download messed with my pages (a lot) - problems, problems, problems - this made me click to restore my back-up that created a Fatal Error message. I fixed the problem (thanks for the guidance everyone).
My question is it a good idea to try an update again. Is the newest version that much better...I am scared of going through the whole crash process again.
The only reasons I wanted to update Concrete is that the newest version allows people to time when they want their posts to be put on their website which I would love to have!!

I make a clone of the site in another directory of the web server, create a subdomain to point to that clone, update the clone, get any glitches sorted out.
Repeat the clone/update process as necessary until I am 100% sure that it is good.
Then, all i have to do is swap the domain name to point to the successfully updated clone/update.
The only complication is if the live site data is constantly changing (forums, ecommerce etc). In that case, once I have everything worked out, I put the live site into maintenance mode, make a clone, update the clone and work through whatever I have learned with previous clones, then swap the domain name to point to the clone.
Should anything big go wrong at this point, I still have an option to swap the domain name back to the un-updated site and make that live again.
This process may seem long winded, but it has the big advantage of never risking a live site.
