File manager

Really enjoying concrete5 but am struggling slightly with the file manager.
Is there a way of organising file uploads in a more systematic way?
When I upload an image, for example, it seems to create it's own directories - see example below:
/concrete/concrete5.4.0.5/files/3812/9466/8793/Knowledge-Link-Header.gif
Is this just how the system works or am I doing something wrong?
Thank you.

I agree with laweffect. I LOVE Concrete5 but I'm very confused by the way File manager organizes files. It seems to create a new folder every time I upload a file so files are nested in bizarre and unintuitive locations like /files/9513/1644/9219/
What's the reason for this? Why not use a standard folder structure? Either put them all in a single location like /files/ or, better, let me select or create a new location at the time of upload.
So far this is the only functionality in Concrete5 that just baffles me.

Because C5 has versioning it creates a random folder for the files. That way if you want to version a page back to a previous version that image will be available for display. Although I've also wondered if the way it is done is the best way, that seems to be the main reason it was done this way.
I thin pixo's answer about versioning is the most likely explanation. Also, on some systems it becomes inefficient to have too many files in one directory so spreading things out in different directories is a way to avoid that. Also also this avoids problems where two files having the same name will conflict with each other.
The file manager is meant to abstract away the actual file system -- it shouldn't really matter how it stores the files because you should always be using the File Manager to manage them, not the filesystem directly.

As someone who works with a number of files from a number of different people what seems to work best is assign a "set" to the files as they are uploaded. Otherwise it is pretty easy to select a number of files and assign them to a set. Most of the files I am uploading are by artist name. I wish it were a bit easier to select all files in a set, right now you need to page through a set, adding the ten or so files you see per page, to add them to slide show or picture gallery.
Note that you can show more than 10 files per page by changing the "# Per Page" dropdown and clicking 'Search'.
Good to know. Ten has been fitting nicely but there are times when looking at a whole group of things without scrolling will be very handy.
is there a way to organize the files after they're uploaded? It seems that in a "file manager" one should be able to manage the files.
The easiest thing to do is the arrange them into sets. A file can be in more than one set.
To do this, put a checkmark beside a bunch of files that belong together and then use the 'With Selected...' drop-down you can choose 'Sets' and assign them all to a set. Once you have the majority of your files in sets, it's easy to find them by clicking in the 'Sets' box and choosing which set you want to see. You can even select 'Files in no sets' to find files that need to be put into sets.

Thanks much for the help. That does help a lot but when I choose files and
go to "set" and there's several sets already checked does that mean some of
the chosen files are in all those sets are all of them are in those chosen
sets? If I unchck the sets that I'm not working in does that take them out
of those sets? Thanks, John

Thanks for the info. That does help, however, when I check several files and go to "set" if there's multiple files already checked does that mean some of the checked files are in all those sets or all of the files are in all the sets? Also, if I uncheck the sets does it remove it from those sets? Thanks
Yes if you are in the 'With Selected...' -> Sets , then unchecking them at that point will remove them from those sets.
A green check means ALL the selected files are in that set and a grey dash means that some of the selected files are in that set.

Thanks much for the info. That helps but it seems ALL the files I choose to go in a set don't go there. Just a quirk I guess.
I want to view the files with the line #'s on the page.
In html format of the whole page.
Purpose: Track down my error's I have.

My old file manager would show all my php. pages under domain folder.
It was easy to edit and view them. You could track down your SEO errors down on line numbers and correct them.
Have not found a easy way if any in Concrete5. Look through folders and most are empty.
I go to my file manager in my hosting server.
/public_html/index.php only page it shows.
file reads; <?php
require('concrete/dispatcher.php');
What is that all about?

Welcome to the wonderful world on concrete5. It's a different animal altogether (in good ways). What kind of SEO issues are you having. Perhaps there's a 'concrete5' way of solving them.

If you're looking for something like the dashboard theme editor in wordpress, that is not a built-in Concrete5 thing. But there is a free addon available for it:
http://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/theme-editor/...
As for the contents of the index.php file... yeah there's a whole crazy system under the hood... Concrete5 is definitely not going to function like a normal site that just has a few php files. That's the trade-off of using any platform or CMS... you get a lot of functionality for free (in that you don't need to program it yourself), but it requires that you do things in its own way.
Best of luck.

That theme editor add-on is dangerous. It has no 'intelligent' safeguards when it copies existing themes over to new locations and you can easily wipe out all your modifications to a theme. I played around with it and liked 90% of it but the last 10% was too risky.
@jordanlev, have you played around with it? Perhaps with your experience you could easily add the necessary safeguards to it because I would love to be able to edit the php and css in the Dashboard.

I'm not a programmer. I just thought it there would be an easy way to
change the size of a block. I'm using concrete5 because it's free, and was
advertised to be easy. I've spent the past two weeks building my web site.
A lot of things are easy, some have gliches, but I figured out how to work
around them, and some things don't work. John

I am having major issues trying to clean up my pages.
I do not have any success in Concrete 5.
Old file manager in old site builder was a breeze.
Looking for error on line # everything was there.
Have not been able to find it in Concrete 5.
Page Search? Unable to edit or design when box is checked.
I am lost?

I think what you are looking for is in the header.php file which is usually in this folder:
/themes/<your theme name>/elements/
although in your case it looks like it may be in this folder:
/packages/theme_slate/themes/slate/elements/
WinSCP (Google it - it's free) is a good program to see your files/structure and it even has a basic built in editor.
Good luck!

I don't think it's possible to change it either.
