File manager

If i have a lot of files and necessarily also a lot of file sets, i'm experiencing that working with the file manager can be a pain!
In my opinion the file manager should definitely be improved!
If there are many file sets, the whole thing can become very difficult to overwiew. I think there should be sub-sets and even sub-sub-sets to organize a larger number of file sets.
I wonder how the e-Commerce add-on deals with that very limited file manager?

I would be curious if the developers actually consider that as a subject, or maybe they are already planning to rework the file manager for a future version of c5...?

I can definitely agree with this. While I understand C5 isn't a document management solution, the handling of files becomes very cumbersome once you start gathering a large amount of them.

Has anyone found a working solution for this. I have a client chomping at the bit to get this sort of functionality.

I finally made a solution, replaced the image manager with elFinder 2.0, its the manager elRTE uses.

It's quite the process. As time permits I'm going to attempt to make it an add-on, so C5 upgrades wouldn't knock out your changes.

Just had a look at elFinder and it looks very interesting. I don't have any issues with C5 FM at the moment, but I do have some ideas that will depend on uploading a group of files (zipped) and then maintaining the relationship between them. Maybe this will be of use. A few questions spring to mind.

How much of the existing functionality have you replaced?

Does it handle multi-user security (ie work/cooperate with advanced permissions)?

Does it sit alongside C5 FM, or completely replace it?

What happens to other packages that interface with C5 FM?

I used elFinder w/ the elRTE editor when I did a lot of Drupal sites, it has always been top notch. I like the ideas, good stuff. And to answer your questions:

This completely replaces the file manager both inline and in the dashboard. However the sets are maintained as appear as one-level folders unless changed. Any functionality critical to C5 was adding to elFinder.

Yes, it works off the advanced permissions of C5. And folders and their children can be secured based your permission settings. Review workflow can be turned on if the user has the ability to upload/edit/delete within the file manager.

It replaces it, but I'm working on tweaking it so it's a choice, not a total do or die add-on.

As for other packages being able to work with it, they are still able to do so. They see it as the C5 manager behind the scenes. To the user, it's seamless.
