free text editor for the mac and the pc

Permalink 1 user found helpful
So it seems clear that I will, at one point or another, have to open a .php file and fiddle in code. Being a newb, I don't know what would be the best text editor to help me do that. I think there are text editor made especially for programming which highlights the syntax of a particular programming language. Any idea on what I could download that could be use on both my mac and my pc.

many thanks

If all you want to do is work with a few .php files here and there, I *HIGHLY* recommend TextWrangler.

I would stay away from Aptana because that is a full-blown development environment that is FAR too heavy-weight for what you need -- it will just wind up confusing you.

And I'm pretty sure @mkly is joking about "vim", but it's not very clear -- you won't have any luck with VIM so don't waste your time even looking into it.

Oh, and I just saw the other part of the question about something for Windows -- I also agree with @mikefatty -- use Notepad++ on windows. There is not a really great program that works on both mac and windows, but since both TextWrangler and Notepad++ are free, there shouldn't be much of a problem using both of them.

If you're looking for a good and free IDE i'd recommend Netbeans. Has all the functions for development and a lot of help tools. And of course syntax coloring!
