We have a new client with an old c5 site that is using global blocks. We added a few more global areas to two page templates and they are set up just like the old ones. When in the page default mode the areas are highlighted as "global" when you edit them you get the message that "this is a global area and all changes will be reflected throughout the site...." -

So all is good right?

Nope, when you go to an actual page and go to edit the global block from there you get "This block is an alias of Page Defaults. Editing it here will disconnect it co changes to the Page faults will no be reflected here."

What are we doing wrong? Why do the original ones work but these do not?
