How does the "Alternate Storage Directory" work?

Hey, I just noticed the "Alternate Storage Directory" option in the Dashboard today. How does this work? Is it possible to use it to add files which are hosted on another server?

It would be great to be able to use this to link to large files (like video) which are hosted on another server, but still be able to reference and use them like anything else in the file manager.

Thanks for the help!

sure. You have an alternate storage set up, this basically makes it so you can have file served from a location(preferrably shared or one directory up from where your site is hosted) where an absolute URL to the file doesn't exist.

This makes it so the user permissions are FORCED to be checked through the view inline helper i believe, otherwise they are given the file not found or page not found.

You can upload to your site, -->move the file<--- over to the alternate storage(if the permissions are correct on the directory) in the filemanager and someone again has to have the right session and permissions to see the file.

The addons hosted here(at least the concrete5 ones) are stored in an alternate storage location, not sure about the standard addons(like ours).
