how to add line break or carriage return in footer

Hi,
I can't add a line break or carriage return in my footer.php.
I tried placing \n or \r before or after my long text string in the footer but they did not work.

the html equivalent of as line break is <br>
Thanks for the reply -- it works. I did not know PHP code is also an html code. Your reply also pointed me to search the html codes for aligh center, font color, font size, etc to selectively modify parts of my footer.
