How to create full page (no sidebar) for Homepage
Permalink
Hi, I'm brand new to C5 and still trying to find my way around, but I seem to be stumped at the first post...
I want to create a site, including the homepage, with a full page layout (i.e. no sidebars). I have tried a couple of different themes, and selected various Page types, but I cannot seem to work out how to do this.
Can someone please talk me through, step-by-step, how to achieve this? I have reasonable HTML and CSS skills, but no PhP knowledge.
All help gratefully received :)

Thanks for the prompt reply MKly. I have just re-installed C5 as I had been playing around and thought it best to start from scratch.
I therefore have Plain Yoghurt, Dark Chocolate and Green Salad themes now. None of these had a 'Full' page so I tried following these instructions -http://www.concrete5.org/community/forums/customizing_c5/can-only-g...
I don't think I have succeeded though, as I now have a page that says Full, but when I select it, it still has a right-sidebar.
Another related question - how can you tell what page types a theme has before you download it?

OK, I have answered one of my questions - I now see that in the Marketplace, if you scroll down to the bottom of the page for a theme it shows what page types are included. So....
I have now downloaded the Fluid960 theme, which states that it has 7 page styles, including Full.
I activated the theme, and Clicked on Edit > Add a sub-page
I was then presented with a selection of all the page types and was prompted "Choose a Page Type" - I duly selected FULL
I was then presented with another screen stating "Add Full", asking me to name the page, which I duly did. I saved this and was then in the edit mode for the newly created sub-page. But, it still had a Left-sidebar.
I must be missing something here - I am certainly not finding it very intuitive. Can someone please advise - I need to get a draft to my client by tomorrow, so speed is of the essence as they say..

I have a feeling there is something that we are both missing here.
Is there any chance you could attach a screen shot?

Hope this helps - I have gone through the stages of adding a new page, and taken a screenshot at every stage (see attachment)
Sorry to pester, but I am under a lot of time pressure here, I cannot proceed with setting up the client site until I can figure this out - may have to abandon C5, and go back to Wordpress, as I have to have something to show today....

When you have installed the new Theme, go to the Themes page in the dashboard & before you click Activate, click on Inspect. This shows you all the additional page types and you can choose which ones to install. When you change your page'd design to Full it should now be OK.
Stephen, thank you for you reply I really appreciate the help. I don't know if you checked my attachment in my earlier post, but I still have the same issue.
I have again taken screenshots at every step that I took (enclosed as new attachment) - I still end up with a page with a sidebar. Am I missing a vital step somewhere?
Even if I manage to sort this out (i.e. creating a new page), what I also want to do is change the homepage to a full page - can't work out how to achieve that either.
Pulling my hair out at this end....

Hey Gill,
I'm waiting for a directory to upload so I'm trolling the forum looking for simple stuff that I might be able to help with.
It might seem obvious, but at step 1 in your PDF, did you click the activate files button? I'm sure you did to get the extra page types.
What you could do is just use the Header area for content. This content area is full width so might do the trick.

Stephen, I did not have an option to Activate at stage 1 (see new attachment), but I did activate after I had exited that screen. I went through the process again, (taking screenshots as I went along - attached).
One thing I noticed both times is that if I clicked on 'OK' when Inspecting the theme, I got an SQL error message (see attachment), but did not if I selected 'Return to Themes' - don't know if that has anything to do with the problem...
As to your idea of entering the content into the header field, the same thought had occurred to me, but as I have not had time to really look at what is happening behind the scenes as it were, I was not sure if this would have any impact on SEO? I presume from your suggestion that it would not...
Thanks again for your help it is greatly appreciated.

I think the error occurs because it sees the pagetype as being already there.
As an experiment you could find the full.php file in concrete/themes/dark_chocolate/ and rename it full_width.php and re-upload. The system would then see this as a new page type and when you click Inspect, you should get an option to Enable or Activate the new page type

Thanks Stephen - I will try that.
Hmmm, not quite sure what is going on here...
I created a copy of full.php and called it full_width.php. When I inspect the Dark Chocolate theme I can now see it listed (see attachment), but there is still not option to activate it.
If I then go to Edit > Add a sub-page, the full_width option is not shown.
Any ideas?

It looks like a bug with the installation, you should definitely have an option to activate new page types. You could try dragging a new version of the concrete folder up onto you host server & over write the existing one and then go to System & Settings in the Dashboard & clearing cache.
You'd be surprised how many problems clearing the cache can help solve

Stephen, just did a complete re-installation, and this time I selected to add 'sample text' - it all seems to be working now. I can actually create Full pages - Yay!!!
Thank you so much for you help.

Do any of your themes have a "Full" page type?
