image thumbnails with height but no width

If I create a custom thumbnail and set the width to 100 and do not set the height then it will resize the image so that it is 100 px wide and adjust the height proportionally. What if I want the opposite? So I want the image resized to a height of 100px and the width set proportionally. I don't see how this is possible since the width field is required. Seems like an obvious omission.

Where are you trying to create the custom thumbnail?

In the admin using the custom thumbnail form. This is in the latest version. 5.7.2 or something.
