Marketplace broken

I just installed C5.6 and the buildin marketplace is largely empty.
I can find stuff on the concrete web, but searching inside the marketplace always comes up empty.
Is it just broken or am I doing something wrong?
I tried to manually install a package, but it did not show up in the "Add Functionality" window, is that because I am connected to the community? - Will being connected disable manual installs?

You should be able to install packages manually whether you are connected or not. Please verify that in your files the package is like this /packages/package_name/controller.php many times when you unzip a file it unzips with package_name/package_name/controller.php and you do not want that outside folder in your packages directory.
