Background image does not show up after you exit edit mode.It works when its in edit
However when i tested it on side bar and main content area it works then.

You could do what you want to do by using the color customization from theme options, and the problem your having is probably because your choices are being overridden by the overall theme style. I have included some pictures that will guide you through.
