News on start page?

Hello there,
at first: I'm fascinated what concrete can do, just amazing.
But there's one thing that's annoying me:
Isn't there any "News" feature?
Like time arranged content or something?
For our project we need something like this but i really don't know how to arrange news on the homepage.
Hope you can help me.

You can use the pagelist block to collect new pages from a category.

Is there a simple way to represent differently the first one on the list? Sort of "highlight" if you know what I mean.
fe. all items are just names, but the first one have description shown.
= yes . simple by editing Pagelist template.
