Not able to update add-on

I did a search on this issue but never found a solution.

I am updating some add-ons on a version 5.5.2.1 site. I get...

Unable to backup old package directory to /home2/xxxxxx/public_html/files/trash

I checked all folders and they are 777.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I struggled with this problem for months! The solution for me was to recursively CHMOD to 0777 the packages subdirectory for the addon or theme you are updating. Of course, you also have to CHMOD to 0777 the files/trash directory.
