Not Even Sure What's Wrong
PermalinkSo I have this site for a client, denisonperformingarts.org, and it's on 5.7.5.9. To get to the point, I don't even know what's wrong with it. I'm sure it's something I've done -- I'm the only person who does anything to it -- but I can't figure out what.
At first I suspected caching problems or javascript, but I have no idea at this point. I have all caching turned off. There are various things wrong with this site, but here's one of them --
1.) I'll put the site in Edit Mode.
2.) I'll click on a block (any of them -- it doesn't matter which one) to edit it.
3.) SOMETIMES -- and this is key -- it will let me edit the block. (For example, if it's a content block and it doesn't let me edit it -- when it doesn't let me edit it, it'll just have the translucent background with the green outline around the block, as though it's letting you know you're SUPPOSED to be allowed to edit it, but the editing toolbar -- bold/italic/underline/strike, format, etc. -- the toolbar will not be there, and you won't be able to click in the content box to type. The cursor will just be a regular arrow.)
4.) Assuming I was able to edit -- After I click "Save," SOMETIMES it will have the confirmation that says, "Block has been saved successfully."
5.) I click "Publish."
6.) The page refreshes, and whatever edits I just made are not visible.
7.) I open Chrome dev tools to see if they're actually there (and just invisible), or if they are, in fact, not there at all.
8.) After finding out they're not there altogether, I go into the dashboard, clear cache. I go into the server and manually delete all cached files. I delete my browser cache/history/etc., while I'm at it because -- you never know.
9.) Nothing comes of it. So I close the browser and walk away from this whole mess, come back hours later, and all of a sudden I can edit and publish again. For perhaps an hour or so, then this cycle starts again.
I've also noticed that whenever it does allow me to publish, the versions are off. A lot of the time, it's as though it's slow, in a way -- like I'm trying to publish something, then it only ever shows the edits hours later. Like, if I was trying to edit Version X, then I publish it and it's now Version Y, it still shows Version X. Version Y won't appear until hours later -- even if I've cleared the cache and everything else.
I'm using a Marketplace theme, and I have added custom code to it, but I've gotten rid of all custom javascript except for maybe four lines.
There was a point when the edit bar was missing from every page but the home page, and I've got that one cleared up -- thank God.
OH -- by the way -- when I started typing all this mess, I had the site up in Edit Mode in another tab, and I had clicked on a content block to edit it when I was typing out all those steps up there. The editing toolbar was not present. However, it now is. Go figure. As I said, I have no idea what's wrong -- all this only started yesterday.

I know, this thing is so weird.
Here's a bit more info -- About an hour after writing all this yesterday, the problem seemed a little better -- somewhat. All caching still turned off. I was able to publish things -- and have the current correct version appear -- after clearing cache from the dashboard after hitting the publish button. I don't know why that would make much of a difference, though, as I've got all the caching turned off.
Hosting info --
I'm with Bluehost (if that's of any use). Linux with PHP 5.4.43. It's shared hosting.
And, actually, after typing that I feel kind of stupid because I think they recommend having PHP 5.6 or higher. But I don't think that would explain why everything's been fine up until day before yesterday.
I haven't tried disabling add-ons. I'm actually wondering what would happen if I do that. With things the way they are, anything could happen. I could disable something, and the page could be stuck that way for hours.
I'll zip up the database and message it to you.
Also, I tried adding a content block on one of the pages -- didn't say anything other than "test," just so I could see if it would show up. I tried hitting "save changes," and the block wasn't there.
So I went into the list of page versions, clicked on the latest one, and approved it. The block still wasn't there. It also wasn't there after I cleared the cache and refreshed the page.
