Online payment system

I look after a small not for profit and they want to accept donations online and perhaps later on, the odd workshop. I doubt there will be multiple purchases as you would get from a shopping cart.
What do I need to add this functionality to a vanilla site for these systems to work?
For comparison what other options are out there other than PayPal?
We're still on version 5.6, so there may be a need to upgrade.
