Pop Up (and closable) shopping Cart for ecomm

Hi,
I have quoted on an ecommerce solution for a company and they have asked a few questions regarding the system.
One of the most common gripes about the ecommerce module I have heard from existing customers is that you must RETURN to the SHOP after adding an item to the cart.
This client has particularly asked for an ecommerce system that does NOT do this.
In other words you add an item to the cart the cart updates the total at the top of the screen and you don't leave the shop. Obviously you could choose to view the cart as you can now.
Even a pop up window that you could close would be better than the static page that currently opens.
Frz explained to me once that the reason for this was IE6 but surely with IE 6 usage at less than 6% now it is time to re-look at this.
I want to get this job but don't think the client will like the current system.
Can any of the core team update me on this issue, and if at some point in the future ecommerce will get this feature.
