Problem linking an image

When I link an external url to an image it always shows my homepage first. i.e. when i link twitter.com/MyHomePage the link will automatically direct to MyHomePage/twitter.com/MyHomePage. The HTML doesn't show this, but this is where the url directs to, which of course doesn't exist. Is there someone who knows of this problem? Can you help? Im pretty good at coding so I think I just need a little help.
