Problems with changing Default Menu (Header) Color

I hope I am posting in the correct area for this. I did a search and saw several answers for similar questions.. but NO SOLUTION.
I am using 5.4.0.5. In the previous version, I was able to change the colors of the fonts in the header menu, however, when I upgraded to the current version, it has gone back to a default gray. This is very ugly on my page, since I use a slight tan color as a background.
The funny thing is, it list the color I chose to use in the main.css file for the them (default theme).. but it isn't showing up when you pull the page up in the browser. I also went to Page / Theme and tried changing the design in the box.. adding the color I wanted.. but again, no change.
I need help, as I have dyslexic users and it is very hard for them to use the menu in the default color. Any help would be appreciated.
