Really disappointed with 5.4.1 - file manager doesn't work!

After spending most of the day designing an index page and doing work arounds because the file manager won't upload images, I've now been totally stumped. The file manager simply won't respond when I want to make a new page. What gives?
Any help would very gratefully received. Is it just this version I wonder, maybe I'll go back and use the previous version.

Hi Jon, thanks for the reply. The site is only in the development phase at present. I've just read another thread and had to alter some php in relation to JSON and it not being recognised. I can add a page now as the button now appears but in the search page, the cursor will not activate in the text box so as to let me type. Am checking to see if it's a javascript conflict with a jquery plug in.

Just a quick point I noticed. At work I use a MS OS which to be honest is a pile of rubbish, I experience slow speeds when using Concrete5 that simply drive me nuts and I had to make an ammendment to the php to allow JSON to work.
I'm now at home using Linux Ubuntu and Concrete5 works brilliantly, I'm not a MS basher I think they do some really great products, just wondered if others had the same experience.

you say the file manager wont respond when you want to make a new page? Do you mean the sitemap wont respond?
Are you able to supply a link to your site, so I can take a closer look. Most likely it's a javascript conflict in the theme somewhere or some invalid code. A link to see your site would really help me debug.
