Scale Image solution? (and possibly crop, too)?

Say a client has a bunch of 2MB photos and no Photoshop. Is there any way add-on or jQuery script compatible with C5 that would allow him to upload and compress (and possibly crop) the image so that it is a smaller web-friendly file? Other developers we've worked with included this sort of feature in their sites, but they weren't C5 sites.

Sure. Using the File Manager, click on the image you want to modify, and choose Edit.
This will allow you to use Picnik image editing which has a variety of options.

Is this only in 5.4?

I'm using 5.3.3 and I don't see any options to reduce file sizes or crop images or anything. I can scale them in the WYSIWYG editor or click on the little tree icon and type in the dimensions, but this doesn't actually change the file size. A 2MB file will remain a 2MB file, just visually resized.

You should open the File Manger, click on the image, and choose Edit then edit it in the web graphic editor, picnik.
It's an external online editor.

Don't have that option in 5.3.3 so I guess it's a 5.4 thing.

Any other solutions before 5.4 came along?

Oh you're talking abouthttp://www.picnik.com

Yeah...I guess that would work. It would be nice to have it in the CMS, though. The developers I worked with before integrated it into one of our sites. I guess it was a javascript type of widget.

No, the option is there since 5.3.3
I just installed it. Here's a screen shot.
From Dashboard -> File Manager -> click an image -> Edit
