slideshow image size and best practices

Hello,

I'm playing around with the core slideshow block in 5.5.2 using a fileset of images. I'm having mixed results with scaling/cropping within the block.

I thought I should set all my images to 96 dpi and resize them all to a fixed width (say 300 px) before uploading, but now I've got portrait orientation images that are not scaling to fit the block size and they're being cropped instead. I'm frustrated and suspect I'm making this more difficult than need be.

My original images are large, high res files that need to be reduced in resolution and in size before uploading for the web, and most have been cropped to various aspect ratios (which is why I think I'm having problems with them scaling to fit the block). I have the ability to manipulate my images before uploading to the site, and I would like to know what are the recommended practices and workflow people are using to create slideshows.

Thanks,
Barry

Sorry, forgot to include the site link:

The slideshow shown at the bottom of the page currently has 2 images - one is 300 wide x 225 high and the other is 300 x 527 high. I set the slideshow width to be 300 in the block. You can see the portrait orientation image is being cropped :(

Any ideas?
