Spell Checker -- slow down please!

When experimenting with the spell checker in the blog editor for the first time, it places squiggly red lines under misspelled words, as expected. HOWEVER I have only 2 or 3 seconds to click on one of them, or they all go away!
I've searched online, and looked through some of the code, without finding a way to adjust the timing. When I saw PSPELL_FAST in config.php, I thought that was it, but the PHP manual says that PSPELL_NORMAL and PSPELL_FAST etc just refer to the number of suggestions offered, not the timing.
Anyone else have this experience?
