toolbar suddenly missing in Safari, shows in Firefox

I tend to think these kind of issues are my own blundering, but this is peculiar.
Suddenly my c5 editing toolbar is missing on two different sites, just in Safari. I login and there is space for a toolbar, but no toolbar. In Firefox the toolbar shows up just fine.
jQuery is only being loaded once.
Any ideas?

As usual, it was my own blundering. Had disabled JavaScript earlier and forgotten about it. Sometimes I even shock myself.
But I don't have JavaScript turned off in Safari and I'm having the same issue. The editing toolbar never appears at the top of pages. This is with Version 5.1.4.
Things are better with Firefox — the toolbar does appear — but Firefox has other problems. For example, when in the sitemap on the dashboard page, you can't navigate to a page of the site by selecting it in the sitemap.
