Transferring- new page type design on all other sub pages

Hello,
I did a lot of pages based on the page type full width. Now we decided to change some things. I thought: if i will change the pagetype it will automatically transferr it on all the pages which are based on this page type, but it doesn´t work. So is it a misunderstunding from me, or is it just the way I did it. Thanks
