Update: Media Library now supports YouTube videos
Permalink
The Media Library add-on handles paging and display for video and audio files, which is great, until a video is not hosted on Concrete. In the past, I recommended that my clients pull the videos off of YouTube and upload them to Concrete, but in the back of my mind I've wanted to find a way to mix internally hosted content with external sources like YouTube.
The Media Library uses Concrete5's file set feature to handle lists of content. In many ways, I believe this to be an idea method of handling lists of files, but unfortunately there is no way to add external files like you can in the sitemap.
However, I've just thought of a way to do it. Enter: text file!
Concrete DOES support *.txt file uploads. So I thought: let's use that to our advantage. If you create a new *.txt file and paste the URL to your YouTube video, you can now upload it to Concrete, add it to the same file set, and your YouTube video will show up in the distribution along with your internally hosted content.
What's even better is that you still can add a title, description or other file properties to your text file ... just as you would a normal video or audio file in your library.
So if you already have the Media Library add-on, upgrade to make use of this feature. If you would like to host other content (like an externally hosted FLV, MP3, or other service), let me know and I may be able to add support for it if there is demand.
Thanks!
