upgrade to 5.3.3.1 breaks site editing

i've upgraded, incrementally, from 5.2.1 to 5.3.3.1. the site works fine for just browsing, and everything in the dashboard works also. however, editing doesn't work at all now. it's a custom theme, modified from one of the defaults. i'm not sure exactly when it stopped working, as i wasn't paying much attention to the editing function during the upgrades.

what happens now is when i log into the dashboard, if i choose "return to website" i get a blank page with the navbar at the top and no buttons except "dashboard". this behavior is also the same for all pages accessed from the sitemap -- if you choose "visit" on any page it comes up blank with the navbar and only the dashboard button.

i strongly suspect this is a CSS issue. i've seen some indicators in other threads that point in that direction. i get no errors of any kind, and it's only a problem when trying to preview the site while logged in.

the problem for me with CSS is i don't know crap about it, so troubleshooting is definitely beyond my abilities.

any suggestions as to how to narrow this down would be appreciated. i'm going to disable the custom theme CSS and see if the preview works correctly.
