User login has disappeared after upgrade to 5.5

Hello,
Prior to upgrading to 5.5 (from 5.4.2.2), my users were required to log in if not at work (i.e. from a specific, internal IP). Now, they have free access to the site, as though it is public.
How do I change this so that users who are accessing the site remotely have to log in again? I've had some spam issues and need to reset this feature ASAP.
One thing to add, I am using Advanced Permissions.
